Make kitchen clocks a practical and useful part of your home decor.
With the huge variety of wall clocks, table clocks, and stand alone clocks available on eBay and from many home furnishings and home decor merchants, it's an easy thing to find a clock that works for your kitchen, from modern to antique.
Hanging kitchen clocks on a wall near the stove or other kitchen appliance is an easy decision which gives you access to the time as you cook, and also offers a decorating opportunity to enhance your kitchen walls. Another obvious "given" is the wide range of kitchen clocks that come built into appliances -- even built into the kitchen range, no pun intended.
How about a grandfather clock suitable for setting up in a kitchen corner, or perhaps in a dining nook in many kitchens? Although you might not think of grandfather clocks as suitable for kitchens, and depending on how ambitious your home decor budget might be, you may want to explore the possibility of a grandfather clock (or "grandmother" clock?) for the kitchen. (Caution: Consider temperature, humidity, and safety issues for your clock and your family before putting something as expensive as a longcase clock in any food preparation area.)
If kitchen clocks hanging around your kitchen or breakfast nook aren't to your liking, how about a nice table clock to grace that breakfast alcove, or even on your kitchen counter top. There simply are a huge variety of clocks of all shapes and sizes that will fit nicely into kitchen decor and provide a quick timepiece for cooks, as well as help you get those meals ready on time, or the kids' lunches packed and them (kids AND lunches) off to school or work on time.
Clocks of all sorts compliment kitchen decor of any sort. Does your kitchen decor focus on a "rustic" lodge or log cabin style? How about clean, minimalist contemporary look? Or do you enjoy a country style "down home" kitchen and cooking space? You'll find floor clocks, table clocks, and wall clocks to fit all those styles and more. Perhaps you have an open cooking fireplace you'd like to improve with a kitchen clock -- how about something in a nice antique mantel clock?

Good regulator clock adds touch of history to every home
A good regulator clock adds a touch of the historical to every home fortunate enough to have one.
Regulator clocks have become synonymous with pendulum clocks in the public eye, but originally a regulator clock was distinctly different in construction and purpose than the more generic pendulum clock. You might think of it this way: A good pendulum clock was fine for every day, run of the mill timekeeping. But a regulator clock was a top of the line pendulum clock, built with a focus on accuracy and long, quality service.
Regulator clocks were carefully, often beautifully crafted and generally displayed in public buildings where they were useful to the public for setting time on their clocks and watches. The increased accuracy of a regulator clock came about in part by the advanced internal technology used. Many were made from special metal alloys that resist changes caused by humidity and temperature. And strictly speaking, a regulator clock had no chime mechanism because the mechanics of the chiming clockworks detracted slightly from the clock's accurate timekeeping functions. (There are fine pendulum clocks which are often erroneously referred to as regulator clocks which do have a chime mechanism, however. And many contemporary wall clocks that are called "regulators" have chimes in them simply for the popularity and beauty of the sound.)
During the mid-1800s in Europe, some of the finest regulator clocks were built with beautiful wood and wood veneers, as well as hand-crafted steel parts, and sold to wealthy homeowners. The best and most expensive regulator clocks of that period were crafted in Vienna. Vienna regulator clocks from the mid- to late-1800s are now highly valued and very pricey as antique collectible clocks.
Simon, Aaron, and Benjamin Willard were the most famous American clock makers of the late-1700s and early-1800s, establishing America's best known clock manufacturing and apprentice system and creating highly prized, collectible Boston regulator clocks among their other handcrafted clocks. They reportedly created or helped handcraft more than 6,000 beautiful longcase and regulator clocks during their lifetimes.
Vintage regulator clock styles are so popular still that many home decor shops sell quality high-tech "regulator style" clocks to grace your walls. So whether you want the beauty of a regulator clock with the high-tech features of a modern wall clock, you can find many fine clocks online. Enjoy the beauty and touch of history a good regulator clock can add to your home.
Pendulum clocks add vintage charm
Beautiful pendulum clocks add vintage charm to your home decor, and you can find pendulum clocks at very reasonable prices through one of our excellent online merchant partners such as Home Living Style Furniture -- or being sold at auction on eBay.
Pendulum clocks date back to 1656 when they were invented by a Dutch scientist who based the idea on earlier experiments by the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei. Galilei discovered that the time span it takes for a pendulum to swing is approximately the same for different sized swings. Don't worry about the science behind beautiful vintage pendulum clocks -- just enjoy the beauty and the calming "tick-tock" sound a good pendulum clock, such as a beautiful grandfather clock or other floor clock, adds to your home's decor.
Clocks were handmade by individual craftsmen throughout most of the timekeeping world until the 1800s. Early pendulum clocks in homes regulated most of the framework of daily life and that function gave its name to more accurate pendulum clocks crafted for businesses and factories as the Industrial Revolution grew and flourished -- these industrial and factory clocks were called "Regulators."
Home pendulum clocks generally reflect the time period and furniture style of when and where they were made. You can find them in beautiful floor cases (such as grandfather clocks), suitable for wall mounting, and smaller more graceful models fit nicely on a fireplace mantel. Vintage or antique pendulum clocks are made so the length and arc of swing of the pendulum can be lengthened or shortened to adjust them for timekeeping accuracy. Newer models are battery powered and as accurate as any modern clock or wristwatch -- while made to reflect the charm and even the sound of a vintage pendulum clock.
Whatever the style and period of your home decor, use some lovely pendulum clocks to add vintage charm and character to enhance any and every room in your home!
Grandfather clocks dress up any home
Grandfather clocks offer the perfect blend of stately beauty and old-fashioned character to bring a touch of charm to any home's decor.
More technically, "grandfather clocks" are properly known as longcase clocks, for obvious reasons when you look at the construction of them. They never got the popular name "grandfather clocks" until the 19th century. Lore has it that the name came from a popular song written in 1876 -- "My Grandfather's Clock." True or not, it makes a great story accounting for this very attractive style of clock.
The single most important factor when considering the purchase of one of these beautiful pieces of furniture (for they are very much a piece of fine furniture, not just a timepiece) is, of course -- size. Simply put, you can't purchase an eight-foot tall grandfather clock for a room with a seven-foot tall ceiling. Well, you can, but imagine the puzzle you'll end up with: how to fit it into your house without major construction work.
Other considerations are the overall decor of your home, the specific decor, i.e., style and colors, of the room where you're planning to put the clock, and the price range you are looking to fit the purchase into.
And don't overlook the wonderful grandfather clock treasures you'll be likely to find in a quality used furniture shop, antique store, or on eBay. (Keep an eye out for estate auctions near you, too. Some older estates offer terrific buys on home furnishings, including on clocks.)

Why do clocks move ‘clockwise’?
Have you ever wondered why modern analog clock faces -- the kinds with "hands" -- are marked the way they are and move "clockwise" as they do? It all goes back to sundials.
When the earliest clocks were invented, i.e., sundials, they were set up to track the shadow cast by the sun as it appears to move from east to west across the Earth's sky. The first mechanical clocks made with faces and hands (early clocks often had pointers shaped literally to look like tiny hands) were made in the Northern Hemisphere, and used markings set up in a way that they followed this same path of the shadow on a sundial.
This became so standardized by early clock makers that this direction became known as "clockwise" -- with anything rotating in the opposite direction being called "counterclockwise."

Irish clocks offer fun, fine timekeeping
Irish clocks and Irish themed clocks attract both lovers of fun and lovers of fine timepieces.
From Irish pub clocks with name branding of various Irish drinks to replicas of famous Irish towers, castles and the clocks that go in them, Irish clocks make beautiful additions to your home and decor.
Ancient timepieces and tower clocks, later clocks built into castle turrets, appeared in Western Europe and the British Isles at least as early as the 1300s. (One of the oldest clocks still in existence, created by Christian Monk Peter Lightfoot, is in the London Science Museum.) Early clocks often were created by monks and other Christian religious, because many of the church's worship centered on various times of the day.
However, very early secular clocks -- such as the Prague Astronomical Clock -- were secular, and often stood on towers or stand-alone structures near the center of towns and cities. Indeed, by 1466 there was a clock standing on top of the governmental center in Dublin, Ireland. It may have been the earliest public clock in Ireland and probably had only an hour hand.
Irish clocks range in style from contemporary to beautiful Waterford Crystal clock creations. If you're looking for a fun clock or a fine timepiece, take a look at some of the Irish clocks on eBay:
